Perth
Perth is the capital and the largest city of Western Australia. Perth is the fourth most populous city in Australia. Perth has an estimated population of 1.83 million. It was originally founded in 1829 by Captian James Stirling as the administrative centre of the Swan River Colony. In 1856, Perth gained city status. As Perth is the capital of Western Australia, the state's Parliament and Supreme Court are located within the city, as well as the Government House, the residence of the Governor of Western Australia. Known worldwide as the "City of Light", Perth got its name when the city lit its lights as astronaut John Glenn passed overhead while he orbited the Earth in Friendship 7 in 1962. The city lit its lights again when John Glenn passed overhead in 1998 on the Space Shuttle. In the Economist Intelligence Unit's August 2012 list of the world's most livable cities, Perth came in 9th!
