How Singapore and Perth manage waste.

Introduction:

People and companies are starting to realize that the things they use, and the way they dispose of them can make a big impact on our world.
Waste management can involve many things. It encompasses collecting waste materials and processing it in some ways, or trying to recycle it.
The handling of waste is according to specific areas. Some countries deal with the issues differently.

Singapore:

Singapore has a dense population and limited land area, thus it is important to have an efficient system for collection and disposal of waste.
The National Evironment Agency (NEA) is responsible for this.

Waste  Collection:

1. Recycling
Singapore has the National Recycling Program, whereby recyclable materials are collected from households.

2. Garbage
Garbage is collected regularly from rubbish chutes for HDB or condominium, and from curbside for landed estates.

Waste Disposal:

In the 1960s and 1970s, Singapore relied on a number of landfills around the island to handle the solid waste generated on the island. However, in the late 1970s, space constraints made it clear that an alternative method of solid waste disposal would have to be found
Incineration is the most effective alternative as it can reduce waste volume by over 90%. Today, Singapore has four incineration plants, located at Tuas, Senoka, and Tuas South.

Singapore also has an offshore sanitary landfill, Semakau landfill.

Perth:

The Waste Authority replaced the Waste Management Board in 2008.

Some of the main area of responsibilities for the Authority includes:

  • Developing, promoting and reviewing a waste strategy for Western Australia and coordinating its implementation.
  • Promoting community awareness and understanding of resource efficiency, waste avoidance and resource recovery.
Recycling collection:

In 2010, Perth launched the Curbside Recycling Program.
Container go out in the Yellow Box one week, and Paper products go out in the Blue Box on the alternative week.

Garbage collection:

In 2008, Perth launched the GreenBin. It is for residential organic material ( which includes food, soiled paper products and pet wastes).

Landfill site where they are processed at the composting area into a reusable soil amendment and fertilizer available to all residents in Perth.

Waste Disposal:

Perth has a landfill site located at 666 Wildlife Road. The site operations include services such as:

  • Recycling,
  • Composting,
  • Waster Disposal.
Conclusion:

The methods that Singapore and Perth manages waste are different. Singapore is land scare and relies more than Incineration. However, Perth relies more on landfill.
