Our visit to Sawyers Valley Primary School - By Liang Yan and Jessica

After a long ride on the bus, we finally reached Sawyers Valley Primary School. We attended a lesson together with the 9 - 10 years old. We started by giving a presentation on Singapore and our school. After the presentation, the teacher, Mrs Lucy Blair, taught us about Aboriginal Art and together with our friends from Sawyer Valley, we made our own Didgeridoo (Rain Stick). We were very excited as we learnt symbols of Aboriginal Art. We drew them on our sticks!

It was recess at 10.30am and our buddies took us to the under covered area. There were no benches and tables so we sat on the floor to eat our snacks. The pupils had their own snacks packed. There was no canteen unlike Clementi Primary School. All lunch and snacks are packed by their parents in the morning before they come to school Our buddies then took us for a tour around the school. We played the sport, Cricket in the oval (field). Some of us played at the playground during the 20 minute recess. Their school had playgrounds but our school doesn't. =(

After recess, we went back to the classroom. We gave our buddies a little token which we prepared. The pupils were very happy. Their teachers also gave us a little koala and a flag as souvenirs. To end our day at Sawyer Valley Primary school, we took a group photo. We had a great time there!

Chemists at Work - Andrew Phang

My friends and I went to Sci Tech to learn about chemistry. The lesson was very interesting and fun as we got a chance to "play" with chemicals. Our instructor was Pete and he taught us the different types of chemicals such as bases, acids and neutrals. We learnt about the universal indicator and if we were to drip a few drops of indicator in the acid, it would turn red. If we were to drip a few drops of indicator in the alkaline, it turns purple. We did many experiments and unfortunately many of us did not have time to finish all the experiments as we have only 1 hour in the lab. Although we did not have time to finish, we enjoyed doing the experiments as it was a topic out of the textbook which we would not learn until secondary and junior college. It was an interesting experience for all of us. I hope that we will have more lessons on the same topic in the future. As some of us are very interesting and it will be a first step into the world of complicated science.

Sci Tech - Exhibits! By Yujun

We went to Sci Tech to attend a lesson on Chemistry. We were not very familiar with the topic and hence we were very excited. As we were there early, we were allowed to explore the Sci Tech. There were many interesting exhibits on display. One of which was a laser harp. We could play the harp by gliding our fingers through the laser! It produced wonderful music. Other examples are the electricity from magnetism exhibit, the pull - your - own weight exhibit and the floating ball exhibit. Sci tech is very similar to our Singapore Science Centre but it's actually smaller. Singapore Science Centre is much bigger with more exhibits. I definitely learnt a lot during this adventure in Sci Tech!

Day 2 - updates

Dear parents,

Due to poor reception, we are unable to allow pupils to "skpe" with their parents.
Everyone is safe and sound. They are resting early at the farm. Good night.

Pictures @ Moore River

The Moore River by Bryan Lee

We had a hearty brekkie of hot drinks, cereal, fish fingers, scrambled eggs, hash browns, baked beans and toast. After brekkie, we set out for Moore River for lunch. Mr. Phil Cook, our tour guide, brought us to the sand bar. The temperature was very low and the wind was strong due to the rains. Mr. Cook said that during winter, the 'natural dam' of sand would allow the water level in the estuary to rise.

One type of fish found in the river is their black bream which is most hunted by fishermen. There are different types of birds found near the river. The Estuary eco system is an intricate web. The trash that humans leave around, be it at the beach or inland, can find their way into the river system. This would cause the river to be polluted, harming fishes in the pond.

On the drive back, we also saw various animals like the emu, al pacas, cattle and horse. We also did a pit-stop at the Gin Gin park where there was a water wheel, a pond and ducks, and a playground! Most of us played on the swing while some of us went to the pond to chase the ducks around. There were about ten ducks!

After that, we made our way back to the farm. What a wonderful day!

Day 2 At Orchard Glory Farm (By Chester Chiow) - Team building activities

It was a treasure hunt and we were given  tasks to complete. Upon completion of the tasks, the winning group would get a big box of treasures! To add on to our excitement, it was boys vs girls.

Our first task was to build two towers using a packet of balloons and a packet of straws. We had to work as a team. There were many ideas sprouting from every member of the team. We could not decide which idea to use. Hence, we decided to just do it! As we continued building the tower, more ideas were contributed and soon we were working as a team. Voila! We, the boys, managed to make two structures before the girls.

The next task was to build a structure to protect the egg from breaking when thrown from a chair. The materials given was again straws. We tried so many times. On our first attempt, the egg came out of the protective layer. We rebuilt the structure and tried again. This time, the egg broke. We added more layers and finally on our third attempt, the egg didn't break! We did it!

It was a great team bonding session!

Accommodation at Orchard Glory Farm by Nyi Htet

We arrived at Orchard Glory Farm after the morning's Millennium Kids Programme on the first day. The chalet was very nice-looking. There were 6 beds, 3 bedrooms and 2 toilets in each chalet. We were supposed to switch off the lights and go to bed by 9.30p.m. in the first night. Before going to bed, we showered and did our reflections. When it was 9.30p.m., we went to bed. Since it was freezing and winter season, there was an electric blanket on each bed. The blanket heated our beds and made it very warm. We fell asleep almost immediately, as soon as our heads touched the pillows. Thankfully, we were allowed to sleep for 9 hours and were very refreshed when we woke up!

Yummy food.... Day 1 and Day 2 ( By Megan Poh)

Day 1
Breakfast
We had a good breakfast at Mcdonalds. We could either choose Hotcakes( pancakes) or McMuffin. For drinks the choices were coffee, tea or orange juice. We actually made our order at Changi Airport before we departed. I enjoyed this breakfast the most as I thought the Hotcakes were very soft and easy to eat.

Lunch
We had a rubbish-free lunch, which we had to make ourselves in the kitchen. We had to cut tomatoes, avocados, slice ham etc. For some of us, this was the first time using a knife. Our teachers were there to make sure we were careful and not hurt ourselves. We had  great fun making sandwiches. We made a tasty sandwich and apples. Inside our sandwich was fresh  lettuce, tomatoes, ham cheese, carrots and avocados.

Dinner
We had a delicious home-cooked BBQ dinner. This was cooked by the owner of Orchard Glory Farm.  The dinner  included juicy chicken wings, lamb chops,  beef sausages, salad and crispy potatoes. We had  orange chocolate ice cream for the dessert. This was my favourite meal as I loved meat and it was a good BBQ.

Day 2
Breakfast
We  had a yummy breakfast with toast, baked beans, fried fish fingers and hashbrown We could  choose to drink full cream milk, Milo, or orange juice. ns.
Lunch
We had a nice lunch that consisted of juicy chicken, beef sausages, lettuce, tomatoes, potato salad,  and cold salad before heading off to Moore River for sight seeing.
Dinner
We had an Italian dinner cooked by the owner of the farm. For appetizers  were salad and garlic bread. For the main meal we had delicious tomato pasta. For dessert we had Cadbury chip ice cream.

We are definitely looking forward to our meals for the rest of the week!

Tin Tin vs Gin Gin

Today I learnt something from our knowledgeable driver, Grandfather Gordon. He's been giving nuggets of information and history of the places we drive through and he explains them in such precise and concise terms! What a treat!

Today it is Gin Gin, an almost forgotten railway town that is getting popular again. The aborigines repeat a word when there are many of the same item. In this case, Gin refers to spear-headed sticks and Gin Gin just means many spear-headed sticks!

We also spotted yellow melon-shaped produce in the fields and Grandfather Gordon traced its origin to the 1850s when the Afghanistan farmers brought camels and bags of seed to Australia. As the camels could not digest the seeds well, they left fertile seeds in the soil everywhere they trotted. Hence the melons sprouted wherever the camels trotted.

Pictures of activities at Civic Centre

Day 1 (29 May 2013): City of South Perth Civic Centre (Chloe and E Hsuen P5/7)

City of South Perth Civic Centre

We arrived at City of South Perth Civic Centre at about 10.55am. When we arrived at our destination, we were told to discuss and think of three questions that we would like to ask about our trip to the Canning Resource and Recovery Centre.

We were then told about how the Millennium Kids Programme started and who were the founded Millennium Kids. We were surprised to find out that the programme was started by four pupils who are about our age. We then played a game whereby we were to think about how long it takes for certain materials to be decomposed. After the activity, Ms Maureen clarified our doubts and informed us that certain items such as the glass could take up to one to two million years to decompose!

For the next activity, we were told to put on our thinking caps and reflect on what we had done so far. We were told to list down our likes and dislikes and also to think of ideas that we could bring back home so as to create awareness to our family, relatives and friends on the importance of waste management.

After the presentation of our discussion, Ms Maureen sat us down and we went through the rubbish that we had accumulated over breakfast. She also informed us what could be recycled and what could not be. The last activity was the MOST interesting one! We were to make our own rubbish free lunch. Everyone of us was feeling really excited as each was tasked to do something.  None of us know what kind of lunch we would be having. It was until the end that we knew that we were having sandwiches for lunch.

After a hearty meal and a debrief by Ms Maureen, we headed to our next destination, Orchard Glory Farm. It was truly a fulfilling and interesting experience! We had also learnt to be more mindful of our waste and how to identify the different materials when we dispose off our rubbish. We are more aware of the benefits of recycling and the severity of the problem if waste starts accumulating. All of us indeed have a part to play in saving our Earth.

Day 1 (29 May 2013): Breakfast and Millennium Kids Programme (Woon Yi P5/7)

Day 1 (29 May 2013): Breakfast and Millennium Kids Program - Waste Station (by Woon Yi P5/7)

After landing, we headed to Macdonalds for breakfast. The trip to Macdonalds took us about fifteen minutes. Many of us were thrilled to hear that we were going to eat at Macdonalds. However, some of the pupils were disappointed as the taste was different as compared to the ones in Singapore. After the breakfast, we headed to the Canning Resource and Recovery Centre. This was part of the Millennium Kids Program. At the Canning Resource and Recovery Centre, we were introduced to the way Perth manages their waste. The instructors, Ms Emily and Ms Maureen, told us that one of the problems that they faced was the people throw the wrong materials into the wrong recycling bins. After a tour at the Canning Resource Centre, we went to the City of South Perth Civic Centre.

In the short one hour tour in the Canning Resource and Recovery Centre, we have indeed learnt about how Perth manages her waste and the importance of waste management. The programme was very motivational and inspiring and I've learnt many new and interesting facts about waste management. We were also told to think of some ideas of how we could implement some of these things that we have learnt back in
Singapore.

Breakfast and millennium kids program - waste station

First of all, we went to Mc Donald's to have our breakfast. After eating we did not throw away our covers, we kept them in the trash bag. We carried the bag along with us to the waste station.

We learnt about the importance of recycling including do s and don'ts too. I could not believe that Perth produces so much waste in a day, but I appreciate their willingness and effort to recycle waste. Only 87%of the waste in the recycle bin can be recycled. The other 13% of the waste is known as the General waste and it is misplaced by people in the recycle bin.

When waste decomposes, it produces smell. The smell is prevented from spreading outside by a concrete wall. The concrete wall carries 'twigs' which prevents the smell from spreading. The waste is then transported to the 'digester'.
